In this portal you will find those who are identifed with a residence of Addison, Barton, Erin, Farmington, Germantown, Hartford, Jackson, Kewaskum, Meeker, Newburg, North Bend, Polk, Richfield, Schlesingerville, St. Lawrence, Staatsville, Trenton, Washington, Wayne, or West Bend in the book Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers, War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865 (RWV). Names were obtained by visually scanning the two books 1,808 pages, page by page. The residence of quite a few individuals were not identified. Later, those that died in service were checked against the book Wisconsin In The War Of The Rebellion. When conflicting information was found, an asterisk (*) was added to the name. If you wish to look up a name in the RWV, go here. If you browse the "WC Veterans" portal under "cemeteries", you will find civil war veterans listed there who are not listed in this portal. In checking some of these names out, it was found that individuals did not live in Washington County when they served in the military, or they were mustered in a community outside of Washington County, or their name may be spelled differently, or after serving they moved into the county, and some are just not identified in the book. If you do not find the person you are looking for, you might use search this site to look up a name, as it will look in all portals for your person. Interesting Statistics:
Looking at everyone who is identified in the book, the overall number of individuals from Washington County would be 2,152. But, of these individuals, there were 35 who hired substitutes, some or all may have come from Washington County. In these cases, we could be double counting. There is a second category, those that were mustered but did not show up for duty in their assigned unit. These individuals are identified by NCR "not on company roll". A note, one NCR individual was found to have served honorably in another unit under a different surname (variation in spelling). All this is shown in the above fields which reflect counts, by community, in the following fashion "a/b/c-d".
The number 2,070 might still be high for some individuals are listed twice as they joined twice, say once in 1862 for one year and again in 1864 for their second tour or others who served in 1861 for three months, then again later for a year or more. These numbers though are small. What the "real" number is don't believe anyone knows. May have missed one or two in the identification process. Others may have had an incorrect or no residence identified. For example, one individual when mustered identified one residence (Rockport), was transferred to another company, and when mustered out identified a residence of Farmington. So, the 2,070 number is, at best, "in the ball park", and most closely reflects the number of individuals who actually served during the Civil War period from Washington County. An aside, if you just count names as listed in the books, add 250 and the total in the overall then comes to 2,402. Each company an individual served in identified the individual. So, if a person was mustered into the 1st Infantry Company A, was later transferred to Company I, he is identified in the book twice, once under each company. In this research work, the person was identified and counted once. You can request a copy of your ancestor's military records. The best we can do to help you at this time is for you to identify the regiment the individual served in (see column UNIT) such as 1st Calvery, 36th Infantry, 6th Light Artillery and then read the regiments history paying particular attention to the time person in which your soldier served. While this will not tell you what exactly your soldier did, it will tell you in which engagements the regimenty participated in when your soldier served with them. names "Abbott" to "Byrnes", go here names "Cady" to "Dutcher", go here names "Eastman" to "Gwin", go here names "Haag" to "Just", go here names "Kaderly" to "Myhre", go here names "Nagel" to "Ryel", go here names "Saam" to "Sykes", go here names "Tanner" to "Zweifel", go here The following table identifies 279 individuals from Washington County who died while in military service during the Civil War 1861-1865. |
