Aikin Elementary mourns loss of dedicated volunteer

For two decades, Sanford Mitchell Jr. showed up at Aikin Elementary nearly every day.
The 76-year-old wasn’t a staff member at the Richardson ISD campus, yet he felt the need to report his absences to the principal anyway. He had his own coffee cup in the teachers’ lounge. The kids called him Mr. Mitchell.
But the longtime Aikin volunteer didn’t make it to the Thanksgiving lunch at the school on Monday. Mitchell died of natural causes Sunday at his Dallas home.
“He felt like it was a job, and it wasn’t,” said Sandra Pointer, principal at Aikin in far northeast Dallas. “He was a volunteer, but he came every day. He never wanted to miss a day.”
Mitchell, an ExxonMobil retiree, didn’t have children of his own. He began volunteering at the school in 1992 through First Presbyterian Church of Richardson. As a member of the breakfast club, he ate with students in the cafeteria and let them tell him stories.
“A lot of the children saw him as the grandfather,” Pointer said. “He was completely gray.”
When the school later began feeding students breakfast in the classrooms, Mitchell took on other duties. He came in at 8 a.m. and left at 1 or 2 p.m. Most of his time was spent in pre-kindergarten, but he also chaperoned the school’s older students on camping trips.
Many of the children in the Title I school come from single-parent homes and don’t have a male role model, Pointer said. With his slow, deep voice, Mitchell filled those shoes.
“Son, you got to wear your pants up,” he’d tell boys when they wore sagging clothes.
Mitchell also lavished his attention on campus staff. He penned elegant notes on cream-colored stationery for Thanksgiving and Christmas and delivered them along with chocolates.
Other times, Mitchell wrote to advocate for the children. Once, he noticed students were getting green bananas from the cafeteria.
“He would elaborate on his concern that the children are receiving bananas that cannot be eaten, and they would be wasted,” Pointer said.
When Mitchell found school supplies on sale, he’d buy them in bulk and donate them to the school. This spring, he bought a laminator because the school couldn’t afford one, Pointer said. Administrators estimate that Mitchell gave $40,000 over 21 years.
His generosity extended to First Presbyterian, where he sang bass in the choir. For years, he bought the bread for communion but wouldn’t ask to be reimbursed, the Rev. David Schaefers said.
At Christmas time, little presents would show up for children in the church.
“I’m 99 percent certain that he was their little secret Santa,” Schaefers said.
Though Mitchell won’t walk Aikin’s hallways anymore, a tree will be planted in the school yard in his honor.
“It will hopefully live for a really long time,” Pointer said.
