From the Heart:

On a genealogy news group, periodically a member posts the message, my son or daughter came home from school and has a project to identify their great-grandparents. How should I help? The answer given is create a pedigree report and explain how the information was arrived at. This is good and the information is taken back to the school and Peter or Mary receive an "A."

Might suggest this "school project" be turned into a "life project" having Peter and Mary actually do the research. You might start with a notebook you present to them. Make it a diary of their activities and findings. They interview senior family members. They go to the church and look up their baptismal record, maybe the marriage record of their parents or the burial service records of their grandparents They go to the county court house and look up birth, marriage and death records. They go to the local or county historical societies and look for period clothes, tools and utensils. They go to the local library and determine what books may be available that provide local history. If there are any, they read them.

They visit the companies where their ancestors worked, they walk the land where they farmed, they visit the homesteads or what is left of them. And lastly, they visit the graves of their ancestors and say hello to each ancestors picture which they carry.

All this be logged by them into their notebook. Pictures be taken as the research Odyssey commences until it is finished. The entire story, with pictures, be contained in the notebook. It becomes their heirloom. Hopefully, the trip into the past would have their ancestors become more than just names.

Genealogy

One aspect in creating a successful family genealogy project is communication. This goes two ways, you to me and me to you. The effort to collect family information is high on my list of activities but for you, your high point is probably when you read this newsletter. And to read this newsletter you need to know that it exists. Many families are unaware of its existence. If you are reading this newsletter and you did not receive the announcement, let me know so I can add your email address to the list of those who are to receive it.

You can help here by forwarding the announcement or just letting your siblings and children know of its existence. Send them an email and CC me. If this endeavor is to be ongoing successful, we need to communicate. And, thanks for your help.

Some may wonder what information about an individual is recorded. Please check here for some suggestions on information you may wish to consider recording.

Please keep me in mind when you change your email providers as this will assist me in getting the newsletter announcement to you. Check here for the 34 families for who I presently need an updated email address. You need to help them as they will not be seeing this.

The Omnibus Web Site's home is located at www.schulteis.com/omnibus/index.htm
Thanks to Donovan James Schulteis for hosting it.

Beginning with this newsletter, included will be a picture of those identified to have departed. If you do not see a picture, I do not have one.

"A memento, and you come to life.
A remembrance, and they hold your hand.
A picture, and you live on forever."
