Facts on John Joseph Sawyer

Graduated High School, Amityville, New York in June 1950. Started work for Philco Distributors' Inc. in September 1950. Enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1951 and attended Boot camp in Bainbridge, Maryland from June 1951 to August 1951. Shipped out to Jacksonville , Florida to attend Airman Preparatory School August 1951 to December 1951. Upon completion went to Covington (Memphis) Tennessee for aircraft engine school December 1951 to March 1952. Assigned to NAS Atsugi, Japan (Kamikaze Base in WW 2) went via Treasure Island, California to board an Aircraft Carrier (Jeep Carrier small in size). Boarded the USS Windom Bay in 1952 and sailed across the Pacific Ocean catching the tail end of a typhoon (pretty rough going). We arrived in Japan about July 1952 where I was assigned at first to the base fire department then transferred to the crash crew on the air strip. Our living quarters were the old Japanese hangers. This became my residence from 1952 to 1954. I went on emergence leave as my father was in the hospital in Amityville. He died before I got home. When the leave was over I was to report to North Island Naval Air Station to a squadron called Composite Squadron Six (VC6). This was the Navies, at that time, only A-Bomb group. We had North American Aviation AJ-2 aircraft, which was a 3 engine plane. The 2 engines on the wings were propeller driven with a jet engine in the fuselage.

I met my wife (Claudia Louise Sydnor) while on leave at the bowling alley on Merrick Road in Amityville in 1954. I had gone to see some friends I had bowled with before I went into service. We were engaged in September 1954 when I was home again on leave prior to my return to Japan for a 6 month temporary assignment. I was discharged on June 17, 1955 and we were married on July 3, 1955. Went back to work at Philco in 1955 but left in February 1956 to work for Mobil Oil in New York City. In 1973 was transferred to the Northeast Computer Center in Princeton (Pennington), New Jersey where I was Computer Operations Manager. In 1977 was temporary assigned to Dallas, Texas for 1 year. I retired from Mobil in February 1986 after 31 years of service.

Claudia and I had 3 children - #1 died when Claudia was 4 months pregnant. #2 was our daughter Margaret Mary on January 2, 1959; & #3 our son John Joseph Jr. was born on November 16, 1963. Margaret was married in November 1985 to Alfred James Crawford and have no children. John was married in June 1991 to Carol Ann Kovacs and have 3 sons. @1 John David born August 15, 1997; #2 Brian Alexander born July 4, 1997; and #3 Andrew James born February 26, 2004. Claudia only saw John David as she died in June 1998. Strange as it seem, my daughter-in-law's mother died in January 1999 from cancer (leukemia). Claudia had lung cancer caused by smoking for almost 45 years and she battled it for a year.

We lived with my family after our marriage but left to be alone by ourselves and lived in an apartment in Massapequa until 1958. Then we moved to our first house in Massapequa in 1958. Both of the children were born in Brunswick General Hospital in Amityville. After I was transferred to Princeton, New Jersey our #2 house was in Kendall Park, New Jersey in 1973. We rented a town house in Richardson, Texas in 1997 for 1 year. After we returned to New Jersey, we had our 3rd house, again in Kendall Oark. When our son was married in 1991, we sold them this house and we moved to Lecanto, Florida. We had a home build there, house #4, where we lived untril 1993/1994. We sold this house as Claudia missed #1 the changing seasons,#2 hated the 10 months of hot weather, #3 the ever present thunder and lightning storms and finally, #4 the children. We bought our present house #5 in Monroe Township, New Jersey at exit 8a off the New Jersey Turnpike. After Claudia's passing, I still remain in this house to date.

Last July my daughter had to have an operation to remove a tumor. Still was having troubles walking so they did a blood test for Lymes's, Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis and the test results were off the scale. She is now on medications and has made some improvements. She will be on medication for the rest of her life.

; "79-year-old man killed in house fire in Dallas’ Red Bird area"

A 79-year-old retiree was killed Saturday morning when fire burned his one-story house in Red Bird. Walter Simmons was in the den of his home on Glen Oaks Boulevard when he died. Neighbors suspect he may have been asleep, noting that he had health problems and that it was more comfortable for him to sleep in his old recliner than in the bedroom with his wife, Evelyn.

It was unclear how the fire started or how much of a chance Simmons had to escape. His wife heard the fire alarm around 3:30 a.m. By then, the blaze was so strong that she couldn’t walk into the den. Instead, she ran outside to find help.

The couple’s neighbors, Marsha and Robert Lee, awoke to the sound of Evelyn Simmons banging on their door. Marsha Lee called 911, and her husband ran outside to help.

As Robert Lee approached the house, the fire didn’t look too bad. Smoke was curling out the windows and up above the roof, but no flames were visible. But when he opened the front door, he heard fire crackling and was overwhelmed with smoke.

“I couldn’t get inside because of the heat,” he said. He fetched a fire extinguisher, but that was little help. The flames grew and eventually burned a hole in the roof. Dallas Fire-Rescue firefighters arrived within minutes. They kept the blaze from spreading to the rest of the house, but by the time they made it inside, Simmons was dead.

Family members locked up the house and hung a blue tarp over the hole in the roof Saturday afternoon. The fire caused about $40,000 worth of damage, Dallas Fire-Rescue said.

The Lees, who have been neighbors of the Simmonses for about 25 years, remained in their house after the fire, wishing they could have done more. “He was the perfect neighbor — real friendly, always asked about our kids,” Robert Lee said.

The Lees said they were relieved that his wife got out alive. Firefighters agreed.
“If not for the sound of the smoke detectors warning the occupant, the situation could have turned out even worse,” department spokesman Jason Evans said.
