Robert Ludin
M, b. 12 November 1919, d. 01 March 2013
Robert Ludin, also known as Bob, passed away at the age of 94 years on 01 March 2013, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Bob was born on 12 November 1919, the second oldest of 14 children born to Alexander and Theresia Ludin of Milwaukee (immigrants from Germany and Czechoslovakia). On 17 June 1939, he married the love of his life, Adeline Preuss in Milwaukee. Adeline preceded him in death on 24 April 1997. Bob was a World War II veteran. He faithfully served the United States Navy from 1943 – 1946. Upon his return from service, he built their Wauwatosa home himself where they resided until moving to West Bend in 1992, and subsequently to Cedar Ridge in 1996 – where he stayed very active in the woodworking shop – creating and repairing projects for Cedar Ridge and the public. His career as an ironworker took him to “heights” all over the Milwaukee area. He worked side by side with brothers Kenny, Dick, Johnny and brothers in- law Ralph and Barney; and lured his son Ron into the profession. With his unwavering work ethics, he earned the respect and admiration of his co-workers. He cherished the ‘simple’ things in life — taking Sunday drives in the Kettle Moraine with his wife and children; family picnics at “Harry’s Lake”; outings to the Airport to see the excitement in his boys watching the planes take off and land; sitting quietly at the picnic table listening to conversation as he watched the Little Cedar Lake waves ripple; enjoying and smiling as Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren grew up around him; and thankful for the many friends he drank coffee, ate breakfast, and woodworked with at Cedar Ridge.
Family and friends will continue to enjoy the many woodworking projects he created and built. Yearly, at the Ironworker’s Local 8 Retiree Club Christmas party — it was his “Christmas centerpieces” (Santa’s sleigh, reindeer, bird feeders, trees, geese, Ironworker related items, etc.) the members would take home. It was always an anticipated surprise to see “what Bob would come up with this year.” Many hours were spent in his son Al’s basement workshopworking side by side creating cribs, bookshelves, recipe holders, coat trees, magazine racks; not to forget the many outside deck projects and home repairs. His final project – wooden toy airplanes – was completed six weeks ago. He was a gifted craftsman which seemed to come naturally.
Robert is survived by his sons Alan (Carrie) and Jeffrey (Linda), grandchildren Jessica (Conrad Rios), Michael (Nicole), and Jeffrey (Paige) Ludin; Amy (James) Gentry, Rachel (AJ Emanuele) Schmitz; great-grandchildren: Jason, Cora, Olivia Ludin; Ada and Will Gentry. Brothers Kenny (Ellen) and Dick (Sue); many nieces and nephews; friends from the Iron-Worker’s Local 8 Union Retirees Club and Cedar Ridge. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Adeline, his cherished daughter Roberta, and his son and buddy Ron. He was also preceded in death by his siblings; Alex, Howard, Betty Volrath, Suzie Quigley, Harriet Pattin, Harry, Alfreda Megna, Theresa Collins, Johnny, Tommy and Priscilla.
A Funeral Service for Bob was hed on Tuesday, 05 March at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel, 1420 West Paradise Drive in West Bend. Visitation was at the funeral home on Tuesday. Interment took place at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Milwaukee.
He will forever be remembered and dearly missed by all who knew him for his sweet kindness and unselfish nature. Love You, Dad.
